The Abyss
By Jael R. Bakari

I stood upon the face of a cliff and
said to the mother
"Open wide
And surrender unto me your mysteries
I am odin sun made flesh
I wish to understand"
She smilled a dark smile
One reserved for fools and the hardy
"What gives you the right small one?"
She asked, echoing gusts from the gorge across my face
"I wish to live" I say. "It is my birthright."
"I have been born of fire
Cleansed in water
And baptized by air...
But it is you I need to complete my element"
She laughs, a whistling howling laugh
Groaning deep into the cracks beneath my feet.
Dust falls but I do not.
I am shaken but resolved.
"By what power?"
The question stuns
for I have but one
Foolish
Crazy
Insane
Answer
"By my own," I say, collecting pieces of me from time's caring hands.
I stand as one
She is quiet and the gorge remains still.
"Not by God's?"
This question I am prepared for.
"We are..." hesitant breaths quiet my mind, stilling the admission from my heart and coaxing the answer buried in my soul.
"One."
"I am them and they are me. Just as you are me and I am you."
The wind roars with every intent to blow me from the blasted cliff.
But
I cannot be moved.
the winds turn to songs I once knew in the womb of my mother.
"Brave little one," the mother speaks. "You may enter."
I bow my thanks and prepare my descent.
